Engagement

Attracting, developing and retaining the best talent is our single most important challenge. Therefore, we put tremendous energy into listening to and acting upon the views of our employees. We know that employee engagement has a direct link to our business performance. It is an essential ingredient in success across industries, functions and operating divisions – bolstering employee retention, customer loyalty, customer satisfaction, sales and operating efficiency, as well as increased financial performance. Weve seen this relationship within our own company where more engaged employees have higher safety records, higher performance, and less absenteeism.

At Molson Coors, we measure employee engagement through our Global People Survey, conducted annually in August and September. The results are highly anticipated by our managers throughout the company, who use them to improve their management of our most valuable resource: Molson Coors people. Weve refined our measurement of employee engagement over the years, initially using an off-the-shelf survey instrument but later developing our own customized survey using measures which meet our specific business needs.

Engaged employees are motivated, committed and demonstrate a high level of energy, drive and enthusiasm in their jobs. The annual Molson Coors employee survey is an important measurement of that engagement.

The Towers Perrin International Survey Research (ISR) organizations three-year study of 41 global companies found that companies with highly engaged employees had significantly higher financial performance, amounting to a 5.75% difference in operating margins and a 3.44% difference in net profit margins. Specifically, the ISR study found that:

Teams with lower engagement:

  • 5 times more likely to have a safety incident than a person in top 25%
  • 7 times more likely to have a lost time safety incident than a person in the top 25%
  • Cost the company $392 per safety incident versus $63 for a person in the top 25%
  • Actual difference in safety-related costs in 2002 was $1,721,760

Teams with higher engagement:

  • Have higher sales volume
  • Generate greater removals
  • Are closer to meeting their sales goals

We are confident in the accuracy of our People Survey in part because it is completely confidential. The Survey results are generated by an external vendor, guaranteeing that no individual results are shared with managers or company leadership. We do not generate a report for a group if there are less than five people who responded to the survey – a standard that we strictly observe in order to maintain the integrity of the process.

In short, we are careful to ensure that all of our people can be comfortable and open with their responses. This helps us to create a company where people who are passionate about the beer business can work hard and thrive.
